Redeem the Shadows is the documentary that will reveal some of India’s darkest and purposely hidden problems. Currently India is one of the worst offenders in human trafficking. The statistics are shocking. India, along with Thailand and the Philippines, has 1.3 million children in its sex-trade centers. The children come from relatively poorer areas and are trafficked to relatively richer ones. (Soma Wadhwa, "For sale childhood," Outlook, 1998) and according to CNN “The annual Trafficking in Persons report, released Tuesday, says that as many as 800,000 people -- largely women and children -- are trafficked across borders each year. Many are forced into prostitution, sweatshops, domestic labor, farming and child armies.
Since the poorest individuals are trafficked more frequently in India, Redeem the Shadows aims to document the most impoverished social group known as the Dalits. Because of severe poverty and discrimination, there are not many possibilities to escape out of their economic plight. Unfortunately, because of the desperation of this social class, parents often sell their children as slaves. Other children are promised job opportunities and then are captured by traffickers. They are then sold into sex slavery. These problems seem overwhelming; however, we can all do our part to facilitate change. The hope is that through education and a goal of sustainable development the barriers of the oppressive caste system will be broken down.
